Objectives:

Must be no more than 2500 words, not including title page, acknowledgements, contents page, titles and subtitles, references, footnotes (max 15 words each), map legends, labels (10 words max), calculations and appendices (only for raw data and / or calculations). 2012-10-09 12.04.43.jpg

IB Assessment Statements


A: Fieldwork question and geographic context:
  • State your question clearly as this guides the whole project. It must be focused.
  • You must outline the geographic context of the fieldwork – where and why? What is the significance of the topic? Include spatial, physical and socio-economic background to the area, and other important concepts.
  • Map! (use GIS – Google Earth).
300 words. 3 marks.

B: Method(s) of investigation:
  • Describe your methods including sampling techniques, time, location and circumstances of data collection. Justify use of chosen methods and state why you think the quality and quantity of methods is sufficient. Is your data qualitative or quantitative?
300 words. 3 marks.

C: Quality and treatment of information collected and
D: Written analysis:
  • Display the data in the most appropriate way. Include statistical tests if necessary.
  • Interpret and explain your data clearly in writing, and relate this back to your question. Outline any trends and spatial patterns discovered.
1350 words. 5 + 10 marks.

E: Conclusion:
  • Summarize your findings.
  • Include a clear, concise statement answering the fieldwork question.
  • It is OK to state that the findings do not match preliminary judgements / predictions.
200 words. 2 marks.

F: Evaluation:
  • Review your methodology, including methods of primary data collection. Outline limitations which could affect validity of data, including personal bias and unpredictable external circumstances (e.g. weather). Temporal and spatial analysis of limitations.
  • Suggest ways you could improve the fieldwork, and ways of extending it (more data, more locations).
200 words. 3 marks.

G: Formal requirements:
  • 2500 word limit.
  • Well presented.
  • Pages numbered.
  • References follow standard conventions (Harvard system – author, date + URLs and date visited). Footnotes are acceptable.
  • All figures, maps and tables are numbered and refered to in text – do not ‘dump’ in an appendix at the end.
